Which post size is best for Instagram?

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Since its launch in 2010, Instagram has changed and evolved from a 'life in squares' photo sharing app, to a multi-faceted social media platform that encompasses a range of AI powered tools.

Upon launching, users were encourage to upload square after square, showing glimpses into their lives (you know the stuff, those early grainy posts of your ill-prepared dinner, your cat doing a hilarious sleeping pose) but now businesses globally use it as a crucial marketing tool.

Instagram now allows for a wider range of images within it's feed, so the big question is, how do you know which post size is going to be the best for your business?

Even with the options available on Instagram, the maximum Instagram resolution is 1080 pixels wide. This gives us three main options:

Square (1:1) - 1080 pixels x 1080 pixels

Portrait (4:5) - 1080 pixels x 1350 pixels

Landscape (1.91:1) 1080 pixels x 608 pixels

So using those guidelines, the portrait grid post is by far the best one to be using! Remember, on your grid it will appear as a square, so make sure to take that into account when creating your post.

When people are scrolling through their feed though, your image will take up pretty much their entire screen, giving you their undivided attention!
